“Tennis is Love. There is no zero in Tennis, only Love!”

“Keep on playing, over the net and inside the lines.”

Translated by Ho-Seung Lee. Published as received from the interviewee.

Interview with Ho-Seung Lee, Newly Appointed Commissioner of the Korean Austria Tennis Players (KATP).

[A Life Abroad Spanning Five Countries: Playing Tennis and Taking Care of Each Other]

An introduction to Ho-Seung Lee, the newly appointed Commissioner of the Korean Austria Tennis Players (KATP), begins with his father who helped build tennis courts in Incheon following the Korean War. The young boy would tag along his father who was a tennis buff, and eventually Tennis became a hobby and now a group he is leading in the Korean community overseas.

In the meantime, Ho-Seung’s life has taken him across several countries around the world. Born in Australia, he attended elementary school in Thailand, high school in Belgium, and university in the United States. Including his time in Austria, he has spent a total of over 43 years living as an expatriate across five nations. Throughout those years, he has laughed, cried, and shared a meal with his fellow Koreans.

Ho-Seung’s life in Vienna began on March 14, 2002. Having arrived in Austria for work in the UN system, he resumed playing tennis upon settling in Vienna. He even became a founding member of the VIC Tennis Club (UN Tennis Club). Now entering his 25th year in Austria, tennis has become a routine part of his Sundays to meet fellow Koreans.

“The time had come.” That was how he described his feelings upon taking on the role of KATP Commissioner earlier this year (2026), during an interview on August 31. Behind his modest explanation—that it was simply his turn—lay a long-held affection for the organization. If he were to take on a role within the Korean community, this was the association he had wanted to lead the most. The boy who once followed his father to the tennis courts has now stepped into the role of looking after the people he plays tennis with.

Q1. I understand that your father was a great lover of tennis. Please tell us how the connection you formed on the court during your childhood has continued to this day.

Ho-Seung: My father (the late Lee, Sang-Seol) had a deep connection to tennis. Originally from Incheon, he played a key role in building tennis courts at Incheon Middle School—now Jemulpo High School—with the help of the U.S. military after the Korean War. As I recall, he also maintained a close relationship with Hong, Jong-Moon, the Chairman of the Korea Tennis Association (KTA), in the late 1970s. Even while working for the UN in Thailand, he also served as the President of the UN Tennis Club in Bangkok.

I used to tag along after my father everywhere. I enjoyed watching the game. Eventually, I took up tennis as a hobby myself and kept up with the sport after college. After coming to Austria, I started playing weekly with fellow Koreans in the community. One thing led to another, and now I find myself serving as the Commissioner of the KATP.

Q2. You have taken the helm of an association you have long cherished, so this must be a particularly meaningful experience for you. What kind of organization do you hope to build as its Commissioner?

Ho-Seung: It was simply my turn to step up. However, I must admit that if I were to take on just one role within the Korean community, this is the one I would have chosen first. I truly love tennis, so I consider this a great honor. I am eager to do my best. My goal is to create a Tennis Group that is both fun and well-organized.

Q3. You have served as a member of the 21st and 22nd terms of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council (PUAC), also as the Chief of Public Relations for the 39th Korean Association in Austria, as well as the Commissioner of the Korean Table Tennis Association in Austria. You have received a Presidential Citation this year (2026) and also serve as Elder at the Vienna Jungdong Church. I am curious about what drives you to consistently participate and stay active in various communities.

Ho-Seung: If I have a motto for my life, it is 知行合一 (unity of wisdom and action). It means becoming a person whose wisdom and actions are aligned—someone who takes responsibility for putting their words and thoughts into practice. I want to be a member of the Korean community who looks out for others and walks together with them.

Overseas expats have relied on each other while living abroad for so long. We’ve cried, laughed and shared meals, over the many years. That shared history seems to be the driving force behind the sense of ownership I feel as a Korean. That is why I believe active participation is fundamental to a community. Whether it’s a small gathering, offering mutual comfort and encouragement, or simply laughing and crying together—being there and showing up during the good times and the bad is what really matters in the long run.

This spirit of togetherness (solidarity) extends to the KATP’s tennis weekend gatherings. The Tennis Group in Vienna began in 1983 with employees from trading companies, embassy staff, officials from international organizations, and other Korean residents, continuing to this day from the Genesis of founding President Rang Hyo-Jeong and senior members like Kim Jong-Ki and Seo Hong-Bong. Ho-Seung is building on the legacies of past leaders of the Korean Austrian Tennis community and seeking ways and means for making Tennis fun in Vienna.

Q4. I’m curious about what a typical Sunday looks like for this multi-generational group. How many members gather now, and how do you play?

Ho-Seung: We currently have 21 dues-paying members. We meet at LTM Wehlistrasse 320 on Sundays from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On a weekly basis we play randomly in different groups. We try and hold a tournament each month, amounting to about 9 events for a calendar year. Our KATP members come from diverse backgrounds, including the UN, the industrial and restaurant sectors, as well as the Korean Embassy. It is meaningful for people from various fields to come together through tennis for the joy of playing and socializing every Sunday afternoon.

Q5. I’ve heard that among the regular tournaments, there is one called the Australian Open. Could you tell us the story behind that name for a tournament held in Austria?

Ho-Seung: The actual name is called the Tennis Club President’s Cup. However, as the newly appointed KATP Commissioner, I wanted to name it something special, at least for the next two years as I serve as the KATP Commissioner. My name Ho-Seung is derived from the Chinese characters of 濠 and 丞. I was born in Australia—and my name is Ho-seung—it became the “Hoju” Open (a play on my name and the Korean word for Australia). That’s what I call any tournament I sponsor/host and title it as the Australian Open. I have done this for Golf tournaments I have hosted in my name. Whether it’s tennis or golf, I call the tournaments I sponsor the Australian Open.

Various persons from the Korean community have given me positive feedback when I hosted such ‘Australian Opens’. People liked the personal touch I brought to the Australian Opens which I sponsored, and looked forward to when the next Australian Open would be. At least for Tennis, I hope to make the Australian Open a consistent event in the KATP calendar year.

Q6. It sounds like the members look forward to the next tournament with excitement. What vision do you have for leading the KATP during your term, which runs until 2027?

Ho-Seung: I want a KATP that is well-structured with clear-cut bylaws and an institutionalized and solid framework. I also want to have a yearly workplan in place, so the sponsors and members can plan their schedules in advance for their activities during the year.

If people know the schedule a month or two in advance, those coming from outside the area can also plan their activities accordingly. I want to put my heart and soul into every event we hold. By preparing well—even for the small things—I hope to create fun tournaments that many participants can enjoy and play in.

Q7. Last June (2026), six KATP members traveled to Bali for the 2nd World Korean Tennis Tournament. What were some memorable moments for the Austria team during the trip?

Ho-Seung: We happened to know about the World tournament just by chance. Six like-minded members formed an Austria team and went together. It felt like a festival, with so many tennis enthusiasts gathered in one place. We made new friends, enjoyed delicious food, and had a great time playing tennis. It was wonderful to explore a new destination like Bali and to strengthen the bond within our team.

Winning the “Popularity Award” at this Bali event, stands out in my memory. We wore matching red-and-white uniforms according to the Austrian flag, featuring our team logo. It showed that people really liked our team, which was a great feeling. My hope is that we can continue forming a team to participate in future tournaments organized by the World Korean Tennis Association whenever possible. Even if it’s just a small group, we intend to keep representing Austria at these yearly events.

Ho-Seung’s attitude towards tennis is reflected in the phrase he shared earlier: “Tennis is Love. There is no zero in Tennis, only Love!” It’s a play on words that overlays the meaning of “love”—the term used for a score of zero in tennis—with the emotion of love itself. The accompanying message suggests that the next best thing to playing and winning a match is playing and losing one. This sentiment explains why he cherished the time spent playing and bonding with others in Bali.

Q8. I heard that the connections made in Bali continued into the Youngsan Cup last September (2026). Could you tell us about that tournament and share your hopes for future exchanges in Austria?

Ho-Seung: The 21st Youngsan Cup International Tennis Tournament took place on September 19th. About 70 participants joined from eight countries, including Algeria, France, Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, South Korea, and Austria. I also invited Kwak Yong-Woon, President of the World Korean Tennis Association (WKTA)—whom I met in Bali—and he agreed to attend. The former president, Grace Han, is also planning to come.

Perhaps one day, we might be able to host a World Korean Tennis Tournament in Vienna. I believe it is not entirely impossible for such an event to take place here in Austria. I remain hopeful and will continue to diligently play tennis, until that day comes true.

Q9. You must also be looking forward to welcoming new members to share in that dream. Is there anything you would like to say to fellow Koreans who are interested in tennis but haven’t started yet?

Ho-Seung: I hope people won’t be intimidated by their lack of skill level. If you are interested, we can arrange lessons or even take the time to teach you ourselves. The KATP is always open to welcome interested members in joining our group.

We play on indoor courts, so we can enjoy the sport year-round, regardless of the season. Tennis is a great sport where you get to focus on every shot while getting a cardio workout as well as building relationships with others. Our members share a close, tight-knit bond. If you have even the slightest interest, I hope you positively considering joining us. Please show your love for tennis and don’t forget to “Keep on playing, over the net and inside the lines.”

The kid who once followed his dad to tennis matches, now invites others to come onto the tennis court. This interview provides unique insight on Ho-Seung’s vision and passion for Tennis, as he anticipates the upcoming Australian Open in Vienna. He welcomes anyone to come join in the 40+ year legacy of the Korean tennis community in Austria. The KATP welcomes anyone who is interested in playing tennis and make it a part of their Sundays in Vienna.
